Concept


The cone-pressuremeter (Withers et al. 1986, Houlsby and Withers, 1988) test is an in-situ testing method used to measure both the soil strength and stiffness parameters. The cone-pressuremeter device is a displacement pressuremeter device mounted above a Cone penetration test device. The pressuremeter is of the same diamater as the cone and is mounted on the penetrometer shaft behind the cone tip. The pressuremeter is inserted into ground as a part of the CPT test; the pressuremeter is then carried out by allowing a pause in the CPT. The cone-pressuremeter combines the advantanges of a conventional pressuremeter test and a CPT. The CPT probe provides a continious profile of the soil by measuing the stress on the tip, the sleeve friction and the porewater pressure (in th ecase of piezocone); and the pressuremeter allows the assessment of the soil strength and stiffness.
